The Heart of Healthcare: A Calling to Serve
It is a tremendous honour and privilege to serve as the Vice President of the Adventist Nurses International Association (ANIA). I am grateful to God and to the leadership team for this opportunity to serve alongside dedicated nurses from around the world. As we begin this journey together, I would like to reflect on the incredible value of our profession.
Nursing is not simply a career, it is a calling. Every day, millions of nurses stand at the frontline of healthcare, providing compassionate, skilled, and holistic care to individuals, families, and communities. Nurses are often the first to recognise when a patient is deteriorating, the ones who spend the most time at the bedside, the advocates who speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, and the comforting presence during life's most difficult moments and also during the end of someone's life.
Healthcare is a team effort, with every profession playing a vital role. Yet nurses are the constant thread that connects every aspect of patient care. Hospitals, clinics, community services, schools, care homes, and mission fields all depend on the knowledge, commitment, and compassion of nurses. It is difficult to imagine any healthcare system functioning effectively without them.
For this reason, every nurse should be proud of the profession they have chosen. Whether you are a student nurse, a newly qualified nurse, an experienced clinician, an educator, a researcher, or a leader, your work matters. Every assessment you perform, every hand you hold, every life you touch, and every word of encouragement you offer leaves a lasting impact that often extends far beyond what you may ever see.
As Adventist nurses, our calling reaches even deeper. We are privileged to care not only for physical health but also to reflect the love of Christ through kindness, integrity, compassion, and excellence. We have opportunities every day to bring hope to the discouraged, comfort to the suffering, and dignity to those who feel forgotten. Our profession allows us to become the hands and feet of Jesus in a world that desperately needs His love.
ANIA has been established to connect, inspire, and empower Adventist nurses across the globe. Together, we can support one another spiritually and professionally, encourage lifelong learning, develop future leaders, share research and innovation, mentor younger colleagues, and strengthen our global network of Christian nurses.
My vision is for ANIA to become more than an association. I pray it will become a family, a place where every nurse feels welcomed, encouraged, valued, and inspired to grow. Together, we can raise the profile of Adventist nursing, celebrate the remarkable contribution nurses make to healthcare, and remind one another that our work is not merely a job but a ministry.
As we move forward, let us never underestimate the difference one compassionate nurse can make. A smile, a prayer, a listening ear, a careful assessment, or a simple act of kindness can change the course of someone's life.
The apostle Paul reminds us:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Colossians 3:23
May God continue to strengthen each of us as we serve with excellence, humility, and compassion. Let us be proud of our profession, faithful in our calling, and united in our mission to share Christ's love through nursing.
